Shrabonty Shermin
Dear RTI Team,
Warm greetings from Joypurhat, Bangladesh! My name is Shrabonty Shermin, and I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for organizing the event, “How I Met RTI.” It feels like I’ve been swept into a time capsule, traveling back to the most vibrant days of my life.
It was a time when I was a college student, my heart brimming with dreams, and the world felt full of endless possibilities. In those beautiful, carefree days, I felt like a princess, soaring like a butterfly, blissfully unaware of the weight of the future. It was during one of these glorious moments that I first encountered a dedicated listener of RTI—though our meeting was not the typical ‘love at first sight’story.
He wasn’t exactly the kind of guy who would catch your eye, but there was something about his sharp mind and the intriguing gadgets he carried. A few of my friends were admirers of his intellect, especially when it came to science. One afternoon, while we were all hanging out, I noticed him wearing a Radio Taipei International T-shirt, with an RTI pocket planner and pen peeking out of his pocket, and a Sangean Digital radio in his hand (later I came to know he received them all from RTI as a gift, and carried the radio all the time). It wasn’t the man himself who caught my attention, but the curious RTI memorabilia.
After finishing a conversation about science with my friends, he extended an offer for coffee—a gesture I later learned was part of his usual routine. There we were, seven of us, around a table, waiting for French fries and coffee. Out of sheer curiosity, I asked him about the RTI goodies. His response was simple, with a slight smile: “Are you
curious about Radio Taiwan International or just interested in the gadgets?”
Feeling a bit embarrassed, I hesitated. Thankfully, my friend Sweety stepped in and introduced him as a proud monitor of RTI and the founder of the RTI Listeners Club of Bangladesh. This moment, marked the beginning of my journey with RTI.
I’m not sure what happened next, but soon enough, I found myself regularly tuning in to Radio Taiwan International, fascinated by its shows and content. Fast forward to today, I’m a mother of two, living the full life of a housewife. Though I don’t tune in to the shortwave dial as often as I used to, I still visit the RTI website and enjoy catching up on some of the amazing programs you offer.
As for the man who introduced me to RTI, he now has his own family, just like I do. Our lives have taken different paths, but our friendship endures through our shared connection with RTI. It’s a friendship that started with a curious question and continues through a love of radio—a bond that remains strong even today.
Thank you, RTI, for stirring up these cherished memories and reminding me of the beauty of never-ending friendships. I hope you will consider my story as an entry for your “How I Met RTI” contest.
With warm regards,
Shrabonty Shermin
